If your preferred university is not one of our exchange partners, you have the option of organizing your own period of study abroad. You will generally be able to obtain information about admission requirements and tuition fees for foreign students from the Admissions Office of the relevant university. You should discuss any issues regarding the transfer of credits with your academic advisor or the dean's office before your departure.
Matriculation and Semester Fees
To transfer the credits you have earned abroad, you must remain enrolled at the University of Zurich and continue to pay the semester fees.
If you also have to pay tuition fees to the host university, you may request a refund of the semester fees paid in Zurich from the Student Financial Aid Office.
In the event that you will not be earning any credits abroad, or these are not eligible for transfer, when enrolling for the semester, you can register a leave of absence under the status of "self-organized mobility" – provided your stay lasts no longer than two semesters. During your exchange stay you will not receive any invoice for the semester fee or a proof of matriculation. The Student Administration Office issues a confirmation of your leave of absence by request. Instead of the student ID and an invoice for the semester fees, you will receive a statement from the University of Zurich confirming that you are still matriculated. After your leave of absence, you will automatically be prompted to enroll for the next semester. Please contact the Student Administration Office if you have any questions regarding leave of absence.
